Conducting a Peer Review

The Office of Teaching & Learning provides both group and individual consultation for peer reviewers with the goal of supporting activities that provide our faculty with formative and summative evaluation that only increases their effectiveness in the classroom.

Peer reviewers should complete the pre-observation of instruction form with their colleague so they feel comfortable with the goals of the instructional observation, the structure of the course and session, and the process ras a whole.

Peer reviewers are welcome to use two templates for gathering data during a classroom observation. The first is adapted from the work of Chism and other centers for teaching, with adaptations specific to veterinary medicine. It can be used in a lab, a rotation, seminar, and mid- to large-size classroom. In particular, peer reviewers will examine:

  • Organization
  • Instructional Strategies
  • Presentation Skills
  • Clarity
  • Content Knowledge
  • Student Engagement

Some peer review systems promote an established method for coding classroom activities, and some peer reviewers prefer to take notes outside of a more structured template. In those cases, the second template may be more flexible.
